India is roughly 1/3 the size of the United States, with a population of 1,236,344,631 (the second largest population next to China). Near New Delhi there are three main regions, the Yamuna flood plains, the ridge, and the Gangetic Plateua. The Yamuna plains provide great soil, but they are prone to frequent floods. And with the ridge being exactly 293 meters above sea level, it's the most prominent feature in this region. The Gangetic Plains are in the south of the city and cover most all of Delhi. New Delhi is also prone to many earthquakes.
Living Conditions

New Delhi is absolutely crazy with so many inhabitants. Houses on top of houses, shops and building crammed together, and masses of people on the streets. In fact, since New Delhi is so big, and growing at an enormous rate too, the temperatures are predicted to rise 2 degrees by 2030. Most of the people living in New Delhi are working men and women, with the majority being Governmental employees.
Religion

New Delhi is considered the cultural and religious center of India with many religious festivals, holiday festivals, and historic buildings. About 86.6% of the population in New Delhi practice Hinduism, but the rest are Muslim, Sikh, Jain, and Christian. In the picture to the right it shows a very popular festival for the Hinduism religion.
Education

Education is very much valued in India. They look at it as an investment in the future, the key to improving their lives. Although that may be the way they think of education, it's not very well executed. Many kids are forced to start working early to earn money for their family, which is at the cost of going to school. There are two levels of school, primary (from ages 6-14, free), and secondary school (tuition costs money). 90% of the kids go to primary school, but once secondary school comes around only 49% of girls and 59% of the boys are enrolled. So overall only 14% of the whole population goes to higher education.
Languages
The language most commonly spoken in New Delhi is Hindi, from the people that make up the Hinduism population. English is widely used as the medium of communication in that city. Some other used languages are Punjabi from the Sikh religion, as well as many other languages brought to the city from foreigners.
Food

The food easily distinguishes New Delhi from other places, it is so exotic it will leave a mark on the palates of foreigners more used to neutral dishes. Even some of the ice cream and yogurt brands contain spices! Even with their diverse flavors, most of the city are vegetarians. And of those who eat meat, most give up beef because of their religion. So fish consumption is not too high, especially when fish (like salmon) are so costly. During mealtime, it is most common to eat with your hands, mostly your right hand because your left hand is used for bathroom hygiene.
Fashion

Delhi has been so up and coming with fashion that it's also considered the 'Fashion Capital' of India. Most of the main events involving fashion have been held there, such as Delhi Couture Week and Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Since New Delhi is starting to get more popular with fashion, more designers have moved there, making it even more of a fashion capital!
